NIBIRU - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I mentioned my utter distaste for senseless fighting in the introduction of this book, but these guys take it to a whole new level. Though, in order to understand that one must understand the area the city was built in.
Nibiru is in a small river valley on the Gihon River. This area was blessed with rich soil and plants that thrived off of the wet climate and weren't carnivorous. There's actually some fungus that's exceptionally good for humans anyway. It tastes nasty (though, I do have some tips on how to make it taste good in Cooking with Fungus!) and looks nasty, but it's rich with vitimans. This is also one of the few areas in the world where farming is possible, though finding seeds to plant is still difficult. The water is still not really drinkable, but it is cleaner than it is in most places and some of the fungus on the river bank actually eats some of the bacteria in the water. It's still pretty gross, it's unlikely that you'd get sick from drinking the water in this area.
Sounds like a great place to live right? You clearly haven't met the people!
Nibiru probably is one of the most civilized places in the entire world. I say "probably" because it can be hard to tell sometimes. People still aren't working together; instead they're trying to dominate on another. There's a large number of power-hungry people there that want to create a formalized government and laws. Sadly, none of them are willing to give up any power for the good of everyone; everyone wants absolute control and absolute authority over everyone else. "Everyone" is far too broad of a generalization I'll admit, but the vast majority of the population is fighting for control of the city. How do they do this? Easy, by destroying what makes the city a potentially great place to live.
They fight over the water from the Gihon River. They'll set fire to the plants growing in "enemy territory." They'll do whatever it takes to take over and it only hurts the normal people that want to improve their lives and the lives of those around them. It's truely sickening.
As a result, there's constant floods and fires. It's not unsual for the water in the wells throughout the city to be poisoned and it's perfectly normal for about a dozen people to die daily due to gang wars.
